What Makes Difference Between Kewpie and US Mayonnaise

Kewpie mayonnaise is the most popular mayo in Japan for long time and is the only one Japanese mayo that is sold in regular grocery stores in the US. Kewpie mayonnaise tastes different from other mayo in the US. The flavor is crisper, sharper, and little tangier. The texture is rich and creamy.

Majority of US mayo is made with both yolks and whites whares Kewpie uses only yolks. A regular Kewpie mayonnaise comes in a 450g soft plastic tube. It contains 3.6 egg yolks and creates umami and a rich flavor. Kewpie has developed original vinegar mix exclusively for their mayonnaise. This special vinegar mix adds sharpness and brightness to the flavor of the mayonnaise, enhancing it to the point where it’s not only great for salads and sandwiches but also works as a dip or even as a seasoning for stir‑fries.

Secrets of Soft Plastic Tube Package

Majority of US mayo comes in wide-mouth plastic bottles, and you scoop out the mayo with a knife or spoon. Kewpie mayonnaise comes in multilayer soft plastic tubes that prevents oxidation. The package comes with a dual‑structured cap: the flip‑top narrow spout can be used for decorating food, while the star‑shaped opening is convenient when you need to use a larger amount.

Who Are “Mayolers”?!

In Japan, there’s a group of people known as “mayolers” who love mayonnaise so much that they put large amounts of it on almost anything they eat. “Mayoler” is a Japan-glish term formed by combining mayo with the suffix ‑ler, meaning a person. I have seen similar group of people in the US: they dip almost any food in ranch dressing. Can we call them “ranchers” maybe?!

Kewpie Character

Surprisingly, the Kewpie character was conceived by American cartoonist and illustrator Rose O’Neill as a comic strip character in 1909, inspired by Cupid. Later, it became a globally recognized doll. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson are founders of Kewpie Hamburger chains. They started the business in Flint, Michigan. “The Wilsons” Lima, Ohio location became one of the most iconic early Kewpee stores, growing alongside downtown Lima’s development. Today, there are only three Kewpie Hamburger restaurants are left. It is interesting the same character are used at hamburger chain restaurants in Ohio and at a mayonnaise company in Japan.
