What is Tonkatsu
Tonkatsu is deep fried battered pork. This is a typical Japanese dish, but the original idea of this dish comes from cutlet that was imported from Europe in early 1900’s. Meat for cutlet can be chicken, beef, pork, and even vegetables while meat for Tonkatsu needs to be always pork. Ton means pork and Katsu means breaded fried food in Japanese.

Tonkatsu has evolved in a distinctly Japanese manner, shaped by the country’s palate, cultural traditions, and everyday dining habits. Tonkatsu sauce was invented and developed as well. Today, Tonkatsu is served with a generous mound of finely shredded cabbage, accompanied by Tonkatsu sauce, lemon, tomato, and a touch of mustard.
Katsu also means to gain victory, so sometimes a Japanese mother prepares Tonkatsu for dinner, for example, a day before a ball game her son plays.
