What is Firikake?
Furikake is Japanese rice seasonings.
Furikake means “sprinkle.”
If you sprinkle Furikake on cooked Japanese rice, it makes the rice super delicious!
Some parents don’t want children to eat Furikake because children will eat rice and Furikake only. They do not eat meats and vegetables.
Most Firikake is made from dried and flaky ingredients.

Ingredients of Furikake
Majority of Furikake has flaked Nori (seaweed) and sesame seeds.
There are different flavors:
- Umeboshi (Japanese pickled plum)
- Eggs
- Tarako (cod roe) & Mentaiko (spicy cod roe)
- Salmon
- Many more!
Just try some and pick kinds you like.

Where You Can Find Furikake
Today, you can find some at Asian food section in regular grocery stores.
It seems they are not selling well because many people have no idea what these are.
I hope you try it when you find it at a store!
If you go to Japanese/Asian market, you can find it even more.

You may want to ask someone who is traveling to Japan to bring back some Furikake.
It is nonperishable food, light weight, and inexpensive.
