Onigiri is Japanese fast food, slow food, and soul food!

What is Onigiri?

Onigiri is a rice ball made of Japanese rice, salt and Nori (seaweed).

Many Japanese people make triangle shape of rice balls with their hands, but it requires some learnings and experience.

Today, we have a good tool, Onigiri mold.

If you have one, you can make a perfect Onigiri as easy as apple pie.

You can buy one on Amazon if you cannot find any at Japanese/Asian grocery stores.

How to Make an Onigiri

Following is the simplest and easiest way to make an Onigiri.

<Ingredient>

Cocked Japanese rice – 1 rice bowl

Furikake (Japanese rice seasoning) – appropriate amount

Nori (Seated seaweed) – 1/4 sheet

<Preparation>

  1. Mix Furikake in cooked Japanese rice.
  2. Put 1 in an Onigiri mold.
  3. Make an Onigiri by following instructions of your Onigiri mold.
  4. Put Nori around the Onigiri.

You Can Be Creative About Onigiri Fillings

Onigiri fillings can range from classic Umeboshi (Japanese pickled plum) and grilled salmon to creative combination of canned tuna and mayo, offering endless flavor possibilities.

Where You Can Buy Onigiri?

Recently, Onigiris are regaining popularity in Japan.

You can find a lot of kinds of Onigiri in a convenience store in Japan.

There are new specialty shops of Onigiri too.

Some of them are even in the US!
